Chelsea news: Blues duo Sjoeke Nusken and Lexi Potter fit for West Ham clash

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor has confirmed that Sjoeke Nusken and Lexi Potter will be available for Sunday’s Women’s Super League match against West Ham United.

Here, Sports News Blitz deputy content editor Nicole Powell takes a look at what the Blues’ manager had to say ahead of the clash.

Positive news amid an injury crisis

Speaking ahead of the London derby, Bompastor provided a positive update on her squad.

“We have no new injuries,” she said.

“We have Sjoeke Nusken and Lexi Potter back in the group, and they will be available for the game this weekend.”

It is a timely boost for the Blues, who are still managing several absentees.

Lucy Bronze, Naomi Girma, and Lauren James remain out as they continue their recovery from pre-season injuries, while Niamh Charles is sidelined with the ankle issue she picked up against Aston Villa.

Chelsea have indicated that James could return to action by the middle of October.

Respecting West Ham’s threat

Bompastor also underlined the need for focus against a West Ham side still searching for form this season.

“I think in terms of results, they are probably not in the place they want to be, but when you look at their squad, the quality they have, and what they want to achieve with Rehanne, I won’t only reflect on their results,” the Frenchwoman explained.

“They have a lot of quality, and they were able to play yesterday [against Charlton in the Women’s League Cup] and to win, scoring a lot of goals.

“I don’t want to name players, but when you look at the starting XI in the past games, they have quality enough to cause us trouble.”

The Chelsea head coach added that her team will approach the game with both confidence and caution, saying: “So we will be going, as usual, into that game, with finding the right balance of being confident with the strengths we have and the quality we have in our squad.

“We’re also paying attention to the strength they have. So we’ll find the right balance going into that game and making sure we give the performance we need to win.”
