Australian Open news: Carlos Alcaraz secures career Grand Slam with victory over Novak Djokovic
History was made as world number one Carlos Alcaraz secured his maiden Australian Open title and seventh major win in an epic battle against world number four Novak Djokovic.
Here, Sports News Blitz writer Lorenzo Gagliotta takes a deep dive into what happened in the first men’s Grand Slam final of the year.
Alcaraz seals historic achievement
A career slam was always on the cards for Alcaraz and the time finally arrived at the Australian Open against one of his closest rivals in Djokovic.
Both players came in off the back of extremely physical semi-finals, with Djokovic looking the fresher of the two and winning the first set.
The momentum then shifted for Alcaraz as a few crucial break points and a drop shot masterclass saw the top seed regain his footing in the match.
As proceedings went on, the Serb grew weary and committed more unforced errors and Alcaraz capitalised on those mistakes to take a firm hold.
Forehand to forehand, the pair traded fantastic winners, knowing that history was set to be made either way in an all-important championship clash.
Djokovic produced some superb serves, it must be said, but the Spaniard rekindled his energy to bring the Australian Open title within his grasp.
Destiny was secured as the talented Alcaraz sealed a first Australian Open success and with it a career slam, making him the youngest player in the Open era to achieve the feat.
Winning over the crowd in the process, the world number one could not have got off to a better start in 2026, setting the benchmark for the rest of the men’s tour in a historic battle.
He managed to be triumphant by beating one of his tennis heroes and playing in front of legends – in doing so, Alcaraz rewrote the history books in remarkable style.

Djokovic dominance falls short
Djokovic headed into the final after a sporadic tournament in Melbourne, knowing history was there to be written as he sought a 25th Grand Slam title.
The pair last met at the US Open, where Alcaraz prevailed in a three-set epic, and the Australian Open showpiece was their 10th appearance in finals together.
Admittedly, it would have been an incredibly tall order for Djokovic to win his 25th major by toppling both Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz.
The Serb started off strongly, asserting his dominance early on and setting the tone as he looked to make the most of the colder conditions.
His immaculate ball striking was on full show, with both players producing some ridiculous rallies to cancel each other out.
Alcaraz came to life once he dropped the first set, growing in strength and power to outplay Djokovic in the longer rallies.
In the end, the physicality was simply too much for the fourth seed as Alcaraz get the better of him.
Having come up short on number 25, ambiguous comments were offered post-match and only time will tell whether Djokovic returns to Melbourne Park.

What’s next for both?
With Alcaraz etching his name into the history books, he will look to continue his run of form and make it a dominant year against the likes of Sinner, Djokovic and Alexander Zverev while adding to his seven Grand Slam titles.
The Spaniard stuck to the task at hand in Melbourne and can now add a new tattoo to his inventory.
Djokovic still maintains greatness no matter the stage he is on, but the important task for him is to reset and recover from a disappointing finish to a tournament where he has thrived in the past.
It’s now down to how he reacts as he looks to continue at the highest level.
